World Solar Challenge 2015
October 25, 2015
On October 2015, the World Solar Challenge 2015 was held in Australia. The race started in the Northern territory of Australia, Darwin and finished here in Adelaide, South Australia. Countries from all over the world participated for the race, including a team from our very own country Malaysia. The Malaysian team is represented by a group of Engineering students from UiTM Shah Alam.
In conjungtion with their arrival in Adelaide, UCA Adelaide in collaboration with MASCA SA took the chance to greet the team at the finishing line. We also took the time to interview some of the team members in order to get a close-up on their experience, competing in the race. The following is an excerpt taken from the report of the interview.
Recalling on the most challenging incident during the race, the car driver, Muhammad Bokhari Hassan, admitted that the team was on the verge of giving up when their car was caught on fire due to engine failure, on the first day of the race. However, their burning desire to complete the race became their driving force to keep going. Along with the help and support from other teams, they managed to resolve the crisis and get the car back on track the next day.
From having sleepless nights to complete the building of their solar car to braving the harsh condition of sleeping on the campsite and having to race under the scorching sun, the team who was lead by Azwan Abdullah was indeed being constantly challenged physically and mentally as they make their way to the finishing line through the outback of Australia. Their one and a half year of hard work for this competition was paid off as they cruised across the finishing line with their solar car, ‘Stingray’, in front of hundreds of international audience, proudly carrying Malaysia’s name on their shoulder.
The team’s amazing teamwork and the amount of dedication shown have earned them the ‘David Fewchuk Spirit of the Event Award’ during the 2015 Bridgestone World Solar Challenge Award Ceremony, which was held on Sunday, 25 October 2015.
